The day I first first learned what a chord voicing was, everything became different. My piano playing was never the same. How might I describe this change? Well, if you have ever watched the movie The Wizard of Oz, you will recall how the beginning scenes were in black and white. Once Dorothy’s dream began, the entire screen came to life with color. That’s a pretty precise way of illustrating how I felt once I began to put chord voicings to work in my piano playing. It all came together and I was forever inspired.
The first five years of my playing consisting of using chords in all kinds of ways. I knew every 7th chord there was along with being able to play them in all the inversions. That said, I thought I knew my chords.
Well, the day came when I instantly realized that what I knew seemed like so little. It was actually during a saxophone lesson (sax was my secondary instrument) and my teacher was comping out these chords that I never saw being played. Honestly, I had no clue. He then introduced me to chord voicings and that was the beginning of a more colorful journey.
As I matured musically and became involved with taking on students, sharing my knowledge of chord voicings was certainly something I was enthusiastic about. It didn’t take me long to discover that once a person became familiar with just one or two of these chord voicings, their eyes would light up and a brand new sense of confidence would come over them. As a teacher, that always made me feel great.
7 Chord Voicings Every Aspiring Cocktail Pianist Must Know is my way of bringing that feeling of confidence to others who have yet to discover the magic of chord voicings and what they can do for their playing. I wanted this to be something that a person could spend very little time reading and go to their piano or keyboard and starting enjoy the fruits of what they learned. Knowing only one or two of these voicings can enrich your playing so it won’t take long at all for you to reap the rewards.
Do you know how to play 7th chords? For example, are you familiar with a Cmaj7, G7, Amin7 – chords like that? Have you ever felt like you had the potential to make those standard tunes sound more professional if you only had a few harmonic tips to get you going in the right direction? If so, I believe this will make a difference for you.
In addition to the text and graphics, there are links included that will lead you to some short video clips of my demonstrating the chord voicings. This way you’ll have the advantage of both seeing the diagrams with their explanations along with seeing the concepts being applied.
By the way, once you decide to take advantage of this, you have my invitation to communicate with me. I really would like to know how things are going for you. If I can offer some encouragement to you, it will be my pleasure.
So, let’s get started, shall we? You’ll be turning those 7th chords into 9th and 13th chord voicings within minutes. Your songs will come to life with a new sense of colorized energy. If your experience with this serves you well, I will consider that a huge privilege.
